In the mountain town of Fasgar

Written Thursday
I am sitting in "my room" in Rosi's house in Fasgar. Rosi is a friend of Adolfo's, the president of the Bilbao Association, who walked with me and Susanna at the beginning of this Camino. Rosi worked as a nurse in Oviedo, just getting by, and last July made the radical decision to move back to her father's pueblo, Fasgar. She, Santi, and their 3 year old daughter Candela make up almost half of the town's year round population (8) and they are happy to open their home to peregrinos.  They are pretty close to self-sufficient--huge vegetable gardens and several large plots of special potatoes they can sell to foodies. Lambs and a pig for the matanza. Two months snowed in with a wood fire burning.

It was a wonderful walk, most of it along a river.

Marking was excellent and most of the day was off-road. Fences were not today's problem -- getting past large numbers of cows grazing right in the middle of the camino was the challenge du jour. twice I was successful -- but once I just gave up and backtracked to the highway.

Fasgar is at the end of a little country road, with a river running through it.  It has 80+ houses, all of which will soon be filled for summer holidays.  It's 11 km walking over the mountain to the next town, but more than 75 by car.  Tomorrow I'll do that stretch myself.
